Capsule reviews: `Despicable Me’ and others – Yahoo! News

Capsule reviews of films opening this week:

“Despicable Me” — Despite some clever moments and colorful characters, this could have been called “Forgettable Me” instead. It has a pleasingly off-kilter look about it — the work of a French animation house — a strong voice cast led by Steve Carell as the bumbling bad guy Gru and a delightfully cruel sense of humor. It’s actually darker and odder than most family-friendly animated fare, and that’s a good thing — until it goes predictably soft and gooey at the end, that is. But what’s mainly missing from this first animated 3-D offering from Universal is story. There’s just nothing to “Despicable Me,” and that becomes glaringly obvious when you compare it to this summer’s “Toy Story 3″ in particular and Pixar movies in general, where story is paramount. Here, the look of the film is what makes it stand out amid the glut of summer cartoons. The characters are cute in their weirdness, down to Gru’s shaggy, growling dog. Even the trio of spunky orphans crucial to Gru’s diabolical plan to steal the moon are adorable in an unusual way. The scene-stealers, though, are the Minions: tiny, yellow, pill-shaped creatures with one eye and sometimes two who carry out Gru’s evil deeds. At least, they try. Jason Segel, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews are among the supporting cast. PG for rude humor and mild action. In 2-D and 3-D. 95 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

• Christy Lemire, AP Movie Critic

___

“The Girl Who Played with Fire” — This sequel feels like a hasty knockoff compared to the adaptation of the first book in Swedish novelist Stieg Larsson’s best-selling trilogy, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” The story falls back heavily on action from the far-superior first film, and the secrets revealed about its heroine’s dark and violent past are not exactly earthshaking. Yet it’s hard to go wrong with a psycho-genius such as Lisbeth Salander, again played with pitiless, unbridled courage and savagery by Noomi Rapace. This is a woman who will not back down from the harshest of obstacles or the most frightening of adversaries. So she’s not going to let a little thing like a weak followup story completely spoil the party. While uneven, repetitive and occasionally nonsensical, the movie still offers a fair dose of suspense and action for those who can stomach its brutal violence. The story casts Lisbeth as prime suspect in several murders and sheds light on some nasty mystery men from her past. Michael Nyqvist reprises his role as Lisbeth’s journalist ally. R for brutal violence including a rape, some strong sexual content, nudity and language. 129 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

• David Germain, AP Movie Writer

___

“The Kids Are All Right” — The two kids of the film — teen siblings getting to know their biological dad — are great — smart, mature, high-minded, well-adjusted. The three adults, played with fierce heart and a genuine sense of well-meaning inadequacy by Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo, are a mess. Writer-director Lisa Cholodenko’s scenario is a bit forced — repressed lesbian parents forced into contact with the carefree sperm donor who fathered their children. The mayhem that ensues strains credibility here and there. Yet Cholodenko (“High Art,” “Laurel Canyon”) and her cast turn what could have been an utterly artificial story into a warm, funny, sharp-tongued and broiling examination of the volatility underlying even the happiest of families. Bening and Moore play a cozy couple whose 18-year-old (Mia Wasikowska) and 15-year-old (Josh Hutcherson) turn the household upside-down after they contact the anonymous donor (Ruffalo) their moms chose to sire them. The performances, particularly Bening’s, deserve a close look from awards voters come Oscar season. R for strong sexual content, nudity, language and some teen drug and alcohol use. 104 minutes. Three stars out of four.

• David Germain, AP Movie Writer

___

“Predators” — This, the third “Predator” film (there have also been two “Predator vs. Alien” spinoffs), opens with Adrien Brody in free-fall. His parachute barely opens in time, and he crashes hard onto the floor of a jungle. Other mercenaries follow from the sky like Wile E. Coyotes. Bugs Bunny cartoons, though, have more complex narratives than this franchise reboot, directed by Nimrod Antal (“Armored”) and originally written by Robert Rodriguez. Our gang of warriors (predators themselves) eventually deduce that they’ve been dropped on another planet as little more than game for the lurking predators, those dreadlocked monsters who bleed glow-stick green. The “most dangerous game” thrill is so much the center of the “Predator” series that there’s almost nothing else to it. Why bother with silly things like plausibility when your trademark climax is your star covering himself in mud? With Topher Grace and Walton Goggins enlivening things, and Laurence Fishburne in a Col. Kurtz-like cameo. R for strong creature violence and gore, and pervasive language. 107 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.

• Jake Coyle, AP Entertainment Writer.

Hypnosis — What is it? What can we use it for? And can you be hypnotised?

Sally sat down in the chair. She looked at me and paused. “I don’t think you’ll be able to hypnotise me,” she said.

“What makes you think that?” I asked.

“I’ve been to a hypnotist, and he couldn’t hypnotise me. Another time, I went to a stage show, and the hypnotist just couldn’t get me to do the stuff. I went to a hypnotherapist after that, and nothing happened. So I don’t think you can hypnotise me.”

I’ve heard endless variations of “I can’t be hypnotised,” with reasons ranging from Sally’s story to, “I just don’t think you can”.

What is hypnosis?

The thing is, when we ask, “What is hypnosis?” we get many different answers, depending on whom you ask.

Hypnosis is everything

The loosest definition is NLP’s “Everything is hypnosis.” NLP says that hypnosis is simply a different state — and whenever you change your mental state, it would mean you’re in some type of hypnosis!

Whilst this definition is useful and practical for NLP-type work, it certainly doesn’t answer what most of us think of as hypnosis.

Hypnosis is obedience

Thanks to the movies, many people think that when you go into hypnosis, you obey the hypnotist without question and against your will; and when you come out of hypnosis, you forget what was happening.

Like most Hollywood themes, this is nonsense. It does sometimes happen that a person has spontaneous amnesia (in other words, he forgets what happened while in hypnosis), but it’s rare.

It’s also possible for a hypnotist to deliberately cause amnesia, but that generally needs a lot of trust. Some wicked person saying, “And then you will shoot the man opposite you”

would not generate much trust, would it?

Hypnosis is a trance

If we think of hypnosis as a sleepy trance-like state, this covers most types of modern hypnosis therapy. However, a person under hypnosis can wake up and still be in hypnosis. You’ve seen this in stage hypnosis shows.

In fact, hypnosis is generally a more alert state, where you are more aware of what’s going on.

The science

Researchers have measured what happens in the brain when under hypnosis. Although they don’t understand hypnosis yet, they have spotted a number of important things going on. One interesting thing is that, under hypnosis, the left brain (which we usually think of as the “logical” side) becomes less active, and the right brain (the “creative” side) more active.

Under hypnosis, we can access our more creative and imaginative parts, and make great and lasting changes. In fact, I teach self-hypnosis to all my clients so that they can continue to improve after

we’ve finished our sessions together.

A number of other things happen in the brain, but I won’t go into them here.

What can we use hypnosis for?

Hypnosis lets you to change your state of mind, either temporarily or permanently. So, hypnosis is useful whenever you need to change your state of mind. Here are just a few examples:

Entertainment — you’ve seen stage hypnosis, and it can be tremendous fun. Another favourite is to go out and get drunk on water. At closing time, you can safely sober up in seconds and drive home without hangovers, without destroying your liver and without wasting all that money!

Therapy — when a therapist uses hypnosis to speed up or improve therapeutic change

Education — good teachers will hypnotise their pupils (using the NLP definition of hypnosis) to speed up learning and make it more enjoyable

Rapid change — when a hypnotist uses hypnosis to effect fast changes to mental states; such as removing phobias, getting someone off alcohol, increasing confidence, and so many more

Sports performance — to improve game-playing skills. Expert golfers, for example, use a form of self-hypnosis when they take each shot

Can you be hypnotised?

I lifted Sally’s arm. I let go and it stayed there. “Are you keeping it there deliberately?” I asked.

“No,” Sally said, looking at her arm as if it were a strange object.

“OK,” I said. “Imagine that your arm is a stiff rod that can’t bend. No matter how hard you try, you just can’t bend it. Can you imagine that?”

“Yes,” said Sally.

“Right, then, try to bend it.” Sally’s arm stayed straight. “Try harder,” I said. “I can’t see it bending.” It still stayed straight.

“I can’t,” Sally laughed.

“The funny thing is, Sally, when I tap the arm, you can feel control coming right back to you and you can bend it, now.” I tapped her arm. Sally bent it, relaxed it into her lap and looked at me.

Anyone can be hypnotised… It requires is trust; so, if you’re not happy with the hypnotist, it won’t happen. It needs you to be willing to go along with the hypnotist; that’s because it’s your unconscious that does the work, and your unconscious wants your permission to go ahead.

Sometimes, a person can’t be hypnotised, because they’re scared of losing control. I used to be like that. During my first training, I became frustrated at not being able to enjoy the experience (hypnosis is very, very pleasant), and I made a point of allowing myself to lose the control. I’m really glad I did, because the hypnotist used the opportunity to fix a big sleeping problem I had been having for years!

If you’re scared of losing control, you can ask your hypnotist to hypnotise you in a way that you keep full control.

Actually, you always stay in control: Experiments have shown that a hypnotist can’t make you do anything that you find ethically distasteful. You could believe that you’re naked on stage in front of an audience, but if the hypnotist told you to actually take off your clothes, you’d come straight out of hypnosis (unless you’re a natural exhibitionist!).

In short, hypnosis is completely safe under trained hands.

Hypnosis Assisted Weight Loss Is Huge In Hollywood. You Don’t Need To Be.

We have all been subject to the pills, the crash diets, the appetite suppressants the under-used exercise equipment, but Hypnosis?
Does Hypnosis really work?
Can you really train yourself to desire less food by listening to a CD?
Whilst asleep? Really?

YOU CAN lose weight without the YoYo effect.

A technique as old as time, it has recently had a huge burst in popularity. Stars the like of Lily Allen, as recently seen on the 200th issue cover, January 2009, of Grazia magazine; looked fresh faced and slim, as she proudly boasted a 20lb weight drop on the hottest new trend, the ‘hypno-diet’. Stars including Drew Barrymore, Geri Halliwell and Sarah Ferguson have also turned their backs on yo-yo dieting after undergoing hypnosis which uses psychological techniques that link ‘happy thoughts’ with weight loss methods, causing you to lose weight effortlessly that lasts.

Previously beset with myths and misconceptions as some type of ‘mystical magic’ performed by stage hypnotists, trance like states as depicted in movies like Return of the Living Dead, séances around the table…hypnosis has come a long way. Sadly, because of these prejudices, clinical hypnosis never really took off as a cure for genuine problems.

Times have changed and informed and happy consumers now understand the true meaning of hypnosis. Meaning ‘sleep’ it is a natural state of body and mind which, when relaxed, can be an extremely calming and pleasant experience, facilitating us to learn, concentrate and focus with laser sharpness, on reversing the negative patterns of our behaviours.

Ever cried watching a sad film? Or arrived at your stop on the train and not known where your mind was the last few minutes? If yes, then you’ve already been in a state of hypnosis. This was because your conscious mind had let go of reality, completely focussed on the matter in hand. People in hypnosis are totally aware of themselves and their surroundings and are able to leave the hypnotic state whenever they want to, an altered state of awareness, it can be induced normally in everyday life.

Weight Loss through Self Hypnosis – IT WORKS!

Self Hypnosis through CD’s is particularly popular and much easier on the pocket than multiple sessi
1000
ons with a professional hypnotist. Without compromising on quality, it’s simply the ‘crunch’ way of losing weight! It can be induced through listening to a Hypnotic CD in the comfort of your home, under your total control. A recognized, time proven method, of re -aligning your conscious and subconscious mind; the CD reassuringly guides you from beginning to end whilst addressing the fact that it’s the conflict between the two which keeps a person overeating when they say they want to be slim. The CD soothingly suggests that in order to change your habits you must change your mind about why you do what you do, and the way you feel about it. People are hypnotised usually through a ‘calming’ and ‘soothing’ voice induction, which creates a very relaxing experience for the client, sometimes with the accompaniment of tranquil music. Usually the induction involves a relaxing visualisation of some kind. The more you listen to your hypnosis CD the more effective it will be.

Tests have PROVEN just how effective Hypnosis can be on Weight Loss.

In a meta-analysis, comparing the results of adding hypnosis to weight loss treatment across multiple studies showed that adding hypnosis increased weight loss by an average of 97% during treatment, and even more importantly increased the effectiveness POST TREATMENT by over 146%. This shows that hypnosis works even better over time.

Kirsch, Irving Hypnotic enhancement of ‘cognitive-behavioural weight loss treatments’Another meta-reanalysis. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology

In a nine-week study of two weight management groups (one using hypnosis and one not using hypnosis), the hypnosis group continued to get results in the two-year follow-up, while the non-hypnosis group showed no further results.

Bolocofsky, D. N., Spinler, D., & Coulthard-Morris, L. Effectiveness of hypnosis as an adjunct to behavioral weight management. Journal of Clinical Psychology.

In a study of 60 women separated into hypnosis versus non-hypnosis groups, the groups using hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds, while the non-hypnosis group lost an average of only 5 pounds.

Cochrane, Gordon; Friesen, J. Hypnotherapy in weight loss treatment. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology

In the main, hypnosis can help anyone except the very young or those suffering from senility with a wide range of problems such as smoking, stress, anxieties, self confidence, habits, fears, phobias, panic attacks, relationship difficulties, the list goes on.

Randy Charach: Weight Loss Audio CD

This hot new trend of the ‘hypno-diet’ is huge in LA and New York and is becoming increasingly popular in London. If you’re looking for a hypnotic weight loss CD, you can try the Randy Charach Weight Loss program on CD which since launching in the U.S.A have seen sales rise to a 60% growth each year.
'Cool' imagery lowers hot flashes in women nearing menopause – Yahoo! India News

Washington, July 17 (ANI): Women who specifically pictured images associated with coolness during hypnotherapy tend to have a dramatic decrease in hot flashes that are experienced just before menopause, a new American study has found.

“This is an interesting finding because it begins to shed light on what is it, specifically, about hypnotic relaxation therapy that reduces the hot flashes,” said Dr. Gary Elkins of Baylor University.

“The finding may indicate that areas of the brain activated by imagery may be identical to those activated by actual perceived events. Consequently, it may be that while a woman suffering hot flashes imagines a cool place, she also feels cool rather than the heat of a hot flash,” he added.

As many as 85 percent of women experience hot flashes as they approach menopause.

The Baylor researchers surveyed the 51 breast cancer survivors who participated in a hypnosis intervention study for the treatment of their hot flashes.

They found that all participants showed a preference for images associated with coolness, while none used imagery associated with warmth.

Of the themes, 27 percent of participants visualized water associated with coolness.

However, 17.6 percent pictured cool air or wind and 16.2 percent pictured cool mountains.

Also 11.5 percent visualized a cool forest or leaves and 6.8 percent pictured snow. 20.9 percent pictured other things like a cool movie theatre or frost on a winter morning.

Elkins said: “These findings really give guidance to what women respond to.

“This study supports the idea that the most effective images are those that are generated by the participant themselves, in relation to their own perceptions and life experiences.”

The results appear in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. (ANI)

I always find this topic interesting especially among smokers. Smokers take major risks every time they smoke, and yet I still hear that some smokers don’t want to consider using hypnosis to quit smoking because they are afraid of hypnosis. I know exactly where that fear is coming from. As you read every word of this article you will become more knowledgeable of what hypnosis is and how it can benefit you and help you quit smoking for good.

Hypnosis is the term used that refers to the mental state of trance that connects you to your subconscious mind. While in that connected state you can program and reprogram your mind to perform tasks or change behaviors and thoughts rapidly. There are a number of ways of changing your internal programming, and hypnosis is one of the fastest means of getting the job done.

So where does all the fear of hypnosis come from? It comes from outdated notions, books, television shows, movies, and stories. These stories are meant to stimulate the imagination of the readers and elicit emotional responses, not report news or provide factual information. When you watch the Twilight movies you don’t really expect to meet up with vampires and werewolves do you? So why, when you watch outrageous tales of hypnotists and hypnosis does that make you afraid of using hypnosis to quit smoking?

In truth, if I believed hypnosis was the way it’s described in those fictional stories, I would be in fear of hypnosis too. The same way that if I believed the Twilight tales were true, I would be afraid to go out during a full moon for fear of werewolves. But as they say the truth will set you free.

There are no vampires, werewolves, nor predatory brainwashing hypnotists. If you are considering using hypnosis to quit smoking, and are looking to find a hypnotist for stopping smoking, then you should go about it in the same way that you would look for any professional to work with. Call them up and ask them questions about their work. Ask them about their educational history. Ask them about their experience. If you still have any fears, ask them how they’ll address them.

Hypnosis to quit smoking is effective but not because the hypnotist controls your mind. The hypnotist just communicates your own desires to your subconscious in a way that your inner mind totally understands. And when your mind makes sense of what you’ve been trying to do, and accepts the value that the change has to you, it agrees. Once it agrees with the new behavior, you can start to build your new habits without interference from the old behavior.

And that’s really what you want, isn’t it? To be free to take back control over that habit that’s been out of control far too long.

And I invite you to learn how to use hypnosis to quit smoking for free. All the information you need to regain control is in my free ebook, stop smoking hypnotherapy. There are techniques that could help you to use self hypnosis to stop smoking on your own. It’s available at HypnoticState.com.

It’s the same information that was published in the book I co-wrote, Real World Hypnosis, Insider Tips From Leading Hypnotists, that’s for sale on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other booksellers.
